On November 28, 1883, the county was founded from Whitman County and named after Benjamin Franklin.
The Tri-Cities metropolitan area includes Franklin County. Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco make up Washington’s Tri-Cities.
The county has a total area of 1,265 square miles (3,280 km2), of which 1,242 square miles (3,220 km2) is land and 23 square miles (60 km2) (1.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
