Founded in 1818, the county is named after Founding Father Benjamin Franklin.

Franklin County is part of the St. Louis, MO-IL MSA and includes some of the city’s outskirts.

It is situated on the Missouri River’s south bank.

The county has a total area of 931 square miles (2,410 km2), of which 923 square miles (2,390 km2) is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

It is Missouri’s fourth-largest county by land area and third-largest by total area.
