Hattiesburg is the county seat and the largest city.

Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, was honoured with the county’s creation from Perry County in 1908.

Forrest County is included in the Hattiesburg, MS Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 470 square miles (1,200 km2), of which 466 square miles (1,210 km2) is land and 3.9 square miles (10 km2) (0.8%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
