The county was made in 1831.

It was named after a Virginia official, John Floyd. The county is on a high hill in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Little River flows all around it.

The county has a total area of 381.8 square miles (988.9 km2), of which 380.9 square miles (986.5 km2) are land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
