The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1886.
It is named after Samuel Rhoads Fisher, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Republic of Texas’ Secretary of the Navy.
Fisher County was one of 30 prohibition, or completely dry, counties in Texas, but it is now completely wet.
The county has a total area of 902 square miles (2,340 km2), of which 899 square miles (2,330 km2) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.3 km2) (0.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
