President Millard Fillmore’s name was used to name the county.
In 1856, the Nebraska Territorial Legislature set up Fillmore County and drew up its borders.
It was named after the thirteenth president of the United States, Millard Fillmore, who left office in 1853.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 577 square miles (1,490 square kilometres), of which 575 square miles (1,490 km2) are land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2) (0.2%) are water.
