Fentress County is a county in Tennessee, United States. The population was 18,489 at the time of the 2020 census.[4] Jamestown serves as the county seat.[5]
On November 28, 1823, Fentress County was formed from parts of Morgan, Overton, and White counties.
The resulting county was named after James Fentress (1763-1843), who served in West Tennessee as speaker of the state house, chairman of Montgomery County Court, and commissioner to select seats for Haywood, Carroll, Gibson, and Weakley counties.
The county has a total area of 499 square miles (1,290 km2), of which 499 square miles (1,290 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) (0.06%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Fentress County is drained by the Obey and Cumberland Rivers and includes a portion of Dale Hollow Reservoir.
The county has the distinction of being the easternmost county in the United States to observe Central Time.
