As of the census in 2020, there were 24,435 people living there.
La Grange is the county seat.
The county was made in 1837, and the next year it was set up.
Bastrop County and Colorado County gave land to make Fayette County in 1837.
It is named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French nobleman who became a hero in the American Revolutionary War.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 960 square miles (2,500 km2), of which 950 square miles (2,500 km2) are land and 9.8 square miles (25 km2) (1%) are water.
