Somerville is the county seat.
The county was named after the French hero of the American Revolution, the Marquis de la Fayette.
Fayette County is in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Its culture is similar to that of the Mississippi Delta, and in the 1800s, slaves worked on many of the cotton plantations there.
The county has a total area of 706 square miles (1,830 km2), of which 705 square miles (1,830 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (0.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the third most land area of any county in Tennessee.
