When it was established on March 1, 1810, the county was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a Frenchman who served as an officer in the American Army during the Revolutionary War.
Fayette County is included in the Columbus-Marion-Zanesville, OH Combined Statistical Area, as is the Washington Court House, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area.
