Fayette County is a county in the United States state of Illinois.

The population was 22,140 at the time of the 2010 census.Its county seat is Vandalia, which is also the location of the Vandalia State House State Historic Site.

Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area is located in the county’s northwest corner.

Bond, Clark, and Crawford counties merged to establish Fayette County in 1821.

It was named after the French hero of the American Revolutionary War, Marquis de LaFayette.

The county has a total area of 725 square miles (1,880 km2), of which 716 square miles (1,850 km2) is land and 8.9 square miles (23 km2) (1.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
