In the U.S. state of Louisiana, there is a parish called Evangeline Parish. In French, it is called Paroisse d’Évangéline.
As of the census in 2020, there were 32,350 people living there. Ville Platte is the center of the parish.
In 1910, the land that was once part of St. Landry Parish became part of the new parish.
Most of the area was first settled by French Canadian colonists and ex-colonial marines (coureurs de bois) from places like Fort Toulouse and Fort Kaskaskia.
Later, French-speaking soldiers and immigrant families from the 19th century also moved there.
The parish has a total area of 680 square miles (1,800 km2), of which 662 square miles (1,710 km2) are land and 17 square miles (44 km2) (2.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
