Irvine is the county seat.
Captain James Estill, a Kentucky militia leader killed in the Battle of Little Mountain during the American Revolutionary War, inspired the county’s formation in 1808.
Estill County was established in 1808 from land donated by Clark and Madison counties, becoming Kentucky’s 50th county.
European settlers first arrived in Kentucky along old buffalo and Indian trails, passing through Boonesborough in what is now Madison County.
The county has a total area of 256 square miles (660 km2), of which 253 square miles (660 km2) is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
