Erie County is a county in the northern part of the United States state of Ohio.
The population was 75,622 at the time of the 2020 census.
Sandusky is the county seat and the largest city.
The county is named after the Erie tribe, whose name means “wildcat” in their language.
It was established in 1838 by combining the northern third of Huron County and a portion of Sandusky County.
Erie County is part of the Sandusky, OH Combined Statistical Area, which is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 626 square miles (1,620 km2), of which 252 square miles (650 km2) is land and 374 square miles (970 km2) (60%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
