It is named after Richard Ellis, the president of the Texas Declaration of Independence convention. Ellis County is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington combined statistical area.
The county has a total area of 952 square miles (2,470 km2), of which 935 square miles (2,420 km2) are land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (1.7%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
