The population was 30,990 as of the 2020 United States Census.
Ridgway is the county seat.
On April 18, 1843, the county was formed by combining parts of Jefferson, Clearfield, and McKean Counties.
Elk County was named after the eastern elk (Cervus canadensis) that once roamed the area.
The county has a total area of 832 square miles (2,150 km2), of which 827 square miles (2,140 km2) is land and 4.9 square miles (13 km2) (0.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
