Armour is the county seat.
The county was made in 1873, and it was put together in 1882.
It is named after Illinois politician Stephen Douglas.
Douglas County is mostly made up of rolling hills that are mostly used for farming. At 1,677 ft (511 m) above sea level (ASL), the highest point of the county is on its southwest edge, near the SW corner. The land falls away to the east.
The county covers a total area of 434 square miles (1,120 km2), of which 432 square miles (1,120 km2) are land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2) (0.4%) are water.
It has the second-smallest land area of any county in South Dakota.
