The population was 12,126 at the time of the 2020 census.

Brownsville is the county seat and the only municipality in the county.

The county was established in 1825 and named for Captain John “Jack” Edmonson (1764-1813), who was slain during the War of 1812.

Edmonson County is part of the Bowling Green, Kentucky Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 308 square miles (800 km2), of which 303 square miles (780 km2) is land and 5.1 square miles (13 km2) (1.7%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
