Paris is the county seat.
In 1823, Clark County split to make Edgar County.
It was named after an officer in the Royal Navy who was born in Ireland and quit rather than fight against the Americans in the Revolutionary War. His name was John Edgar.
In 1784, Edgar went to Kaskaskia, Illinois, where he worked as a miller and a merchant.
The county has a total area of 624 square miles (1,620 km2), of which 623 square miles (1,610 km2) are land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (0.1%) are water, according to the US Census Bureau.
