Waterville is the county seat, and East Wenatchee is the major settlement.
On November 28, 1883 the county was formed from Lincoln County and named for American statesman Stephen A. Douglas.
Douglas County is included in the Wenatchee, WA Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 1,849 square miles (4,790 km2), of which 1,819 square miles (4,710 km2) is land and 29 square miles (75 km2) (1.6%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
