It is the county with the most people in Nebraska.
More than a quarter of the state’s people live there. Omaha, the biggest city in the state, is the county seat.
In 1854, the county was made and named after Stephen A. Douglas (1813–1861), who was a Senator from Illinois at the time.

The county has a total area of 339 square miles (880 km2), of which 328 square miles (850 km2) are land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (3.2%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
