Charlotte is the county seat.

Dickson County is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, TN.

The county has a total area of 491 square miles (1,270 km2), of which 490 square miles (1,300 km2) are land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Cumberland River runs up against the northeast side of Dickson County. The Harpeth River runs along the eastern edge of the county.

Ruskin Cave, where the socialist colony used to be, is about 13 km (or 8 miles) northwest of Dickson.
