Taloga is the county seat.

The county was named “County D” when it was made in 1891.In an election in 1898, the voters of a county chose the name Dewey, which was named after Admiral George Dewey.

The county has a total area of 1,008 square miles (2,610 km2), of which 999 square miles (2,590 km2) are land and 8.8 square miles (23 km2) (0.9%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
