The population was 198,253 at the time of the 2020 census.
Bend is the county seat.
The county was formed in 1916 from a portion of Crook County and was named after the Deschutes River, which was named by French-Canadian trappers in the early 1800s.
It is Central Oregon’s political and economic center. Deschutes is part of the Bend, Oregon Combined Statistical Area.
Deschutes County is Oregon’s newest and fastest-growing county.
The county has a total area of 3,055 square miles (7,910 km2), of which 3,018 square miles (7,820 km2) is land and 37 square miles (96 km2) (1.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
