In 1865, the county was formed.
Deer Lodge was one of the first nine counties in Montana. It was made when the Montana Territory was created in 1864.
The US Census Bureau says that the county is 741 square miles (1,920 km2) in size, with 737 square miles (1,910 km2) of land and 4.7 square miles (12 km2) of water (0.6%).
It has the second-smallest land area of any county in Montana.
