Davie County is part of the Winston-Salem, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point, North Carolina Combined Statistical Area.
Rowan County was absorbed into the county in 1836.
It was named after William R. Davie, who served as Governor of North Carolina from 1798 to 1799.
The county has a total area of 267 square miles (690 km2), of which 264 square miles (680 km2) is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
