It is named after the lawyer and newspaper publisher James Wilmer Dallam.
The county has a total area of 1,505 square miles (3,900 km2), of which 1,503 square miles (3,890 km2) are land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) (0.1%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
Dallam County is one of only three counties in Texas that shares borders with two other states (the others are Bowie and Cass).
Dallam County is located at the crossroads of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
