Dakota County is the third-most populous county in Minnesota, located in the state’s east central region.

The population was 439,882 at the time of the 2020 census.

Dakota County’s population is expected to be 443,341 in 2022.

Hastings is the county seat.

Dakota County was named after the Dakota Sioux tribal bands that lived there.

Until 1851, the name was recorded as “Dahkotah” in US Census records.

Dakota County is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, the sixteenth largest in the United States, with approximately 3.64 million people.

The county terrain is made up of low rolling hills that slope down to river valleys. Buck Hill in Burnsville has the highest point at 1,168 feet. ASL.

The county is 587 square miles (1,520 km2) in size, with 562 square miles (1,460 km2) of land and 25 square miles (65 km2) (4.2%) of water.
