Challis is the county seat. When the county was made in 1881, it was named after the General Custer Mine, where gold had been found five years before. Custer County gets most of its money from ranching, mining, and tourism.
The county has a total area of 4,937 square miles (12,790 km2), of which 4,721 square miles (12,230 km2) are land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (0.3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
It has the third-largest area of any county in Idaho.
