Currituck is the county seat.
In 1668, the county began as a part of Albemarle County. In 1739, it became its own county.
In 1668, Albemarle County was split to make Currituck County.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 527 square miles (1,360 km2), of which 262 square miles (680 km2) are land and 265 square miles (690 km2) are water, or 50%.
