Cuming County was made in 1855, and it was set up as a county in 1857.
It was named after Thomas B. Cuming, who was the first secretary and twice the acting governor of the newly formed Nebraska Territory from 1854 to 1858.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 575 square miles (1,490 square kilometres), of which 571 square miles (1,480 square kilometres) are land and 4.0 square miles (10 square kilometres), or 0.7%, are water.
