The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1886.
The county and its seat are both named after Stephen Crosby, a Texas land commissioner.
Crosby County is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), along with Lubbock and Lynn Counties.
The Lubbock MSA and Levelland Micropolitan Statistical Area (SA) combine to form the Lubbock-Levelland Combined Statistical Area, which includes only Hockley County.
The county has a total area of 902 square miles (2,340 km2), of which 900 square miles (2,300 km2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) (0.2%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
