Crockett County was established in 1871 by combining parts of Haywood, Madison, Dyer, and Gibson counties.

It was named after David Crockett (1786-1836), a frontier humorist, soldier, Tennessee state legislator and U.S. congressman, and Alamo defender.

The county has a total area of 266 square miles (690 km2), of which 266 square miles (690 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (0.08%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
