The county was made in 1842 and named after John J. Crittenden, who was a senator and would become Kentucky’s governor.
The county has a total area of 371 square miles (960 km2), of which 360 square miles (930 km2) are land and 11 square miles (28 km2) (3%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Ohio River makes its northwest line with Illinois.
