Cowlitz County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 110,730 people living there.
The county capital is Kelso, and Longview is its biggest city. In April 1854, the county was made.
Its name comes from the Anglicized version of the Cowlitz Indian word Cow-e-liske, which means either “river of shifting sands” or “capturing the medicine spirit.”
Cowlitz is part of the Longview, WA Metropolitan statistical area, which is also part of the Portland-Vancouver-Salem, OR-WA Combined statistical area.
The southwestern part of Washington state is where Cowlitz County is. The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 1,166 square miles (3,020 km2), of which 1,140 square miles (3,000 km2) are land and 26 square miles (67 km2) are water, or 2.2%.
