The county was started in 1876, and in 1892, it was put together. It is named after George Washington Cottle, who died defending the Alamo.
Cottle County used to be one of 46 counties in Texas that did not allow any alcohol at all. It can now sell beer and wine.
The Matador Ranch was once in Cottle County. It was in the county next door, Motley County.
