McIntosh is the county seat.
The county is named after Maine native Dighton Corson, who moved to the Black Hills in 1876 and started practicing law in Deadwood the next year.
The Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which goes into North Dakota, takes up the whole county.
Corson County covers a total area of 2,530 square miles (6,600 km2), of which 2,470 square miles (6,400 km2) are land and 60 square miles (160 km2) (2.4%) are water.
It has the fifth most land area of any county in South Dakota. Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which also includes Sioux, Ziebach, and Dewey counties, covers the whole county.
