It was named after a soldier in the Texas Revolution named William Gordon Cooke. It is in the area called Texoma.
The Gainesville, TX micropolitan statistical area is part of Cooke County, and it is also part of the Dallas–Fort Worth, TX–OK combined statistical area.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 898 square miles (2,330 km2), of which 24 square miles (62 km2) (2.6% of the total area) are covered by water.
