Wellington is the county seat.
The county was established in 1876 and incorporated in 1890.
It is named after James Collinsworth, the first chief justice of the Republic of Texas and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence (a recording error in the bill accounts for the spelling error, which was never corrected).
Collingsworth County was one of 30[6] prohibition, or completely dry, counties in Texas until a vote in 2017.
The county has a total area of 919 square miles (2,380 km2), of which 918 square miles (2,380 km2) is land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2) (0.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
