It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan statistical area, and a small part of the city of Dallas is in the county.
At the US census in 2020, there will be 1,064,465 people living in the county.
This makes it the sixth most populous county in Texas and the 43rd most populous county in the US as a whole.
McKinney is the county seat.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 886 square miles (2,290 km2), of which 841 square miles (2,180 km2) are land and 45 square miles (120 km2) are water, which is 5.1% of the total area.
