The county was established in 1858 and incorporated in 1864.
It was named after Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a participant in the Battle of San Jacinto.
The county has a total area of 1,281 square miles (3,320 km2), of which 1,262 square miles (3,270 km2) are land and 19 square miles (49 km2) (1.5%) are covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
