Clinton County is a county in the state of Iowa in the United States.

As of the census in 2020, there were 46,460 people living there.

Clinton is the county town.

It was named after DeWitt Clinton, who was the seventh Governor of New York State.

Clinton County is part of the Clinton, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Davenport–Moline–Rock Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.

On December 21, 1837, Clinton County was made.

It was named after DeWitt Clinton, who was the governor of New York and fought very hard for the Erie Canal to be built.

He was also honored by having the cities of DeWitt and Clinton named after him.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 710 square miles (1,800 km2), of which 695 square miles (1,800 km2) are land and 15 square miles (39 km2) are water, or 2.1%.

It includes the most eastern spot in Iowa, which is on the Mississippi River in Elk River township in the northeast part of the county.
