Clay County is a county in Tennessee, which is a U.S. state.
As of the census in 2020, there were 7,581 people living there.
Celina is the county seat and the only city in the county.
Clay County was named after Henry Clay, an American politician who was Secretary of State and a member of the U.S. Senate from Kentucky in the 1800s.
In 1870, parts of the nearby counties of Jackson and Overton were put together to make Clay County.Clay County was the site of Cordell Hull’s first law office, which is now a museum.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 259 square miles (670 km2) in size, with 237 square miles (610 km2) of land and 23 square miles (60 km2) of water, or 8.8%.
The Cumberland River runs through the middle of the county from north to south.
It is fed by the Obey River, which starts at Dale Hollow Lake and flows through the city of Celina.
The Obey River floods most of the eastern part of the county.
