This made it the fifth most populated county in Missouri.
Liberty is the county seat.
The county was made on January 2, 1822.
It was named after Henry Clay, a U.S. Representative from Kentucky who went on to serve in the U.S. Senate and as Secretary of State.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 409 square miles (1,060 km2) in size, with 397 square miles (1,030 km2) of land and 11 square miles (28 km2) of water, or 2.8%.
It has the fourth-smallest land area of any county in Missouri.
