Clay County is in the state of Mississippi in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 18,636 people living there.
West Point is the county seat.
It was named after Henry Clay, an American politician who served as Secretary of State and a member of the U.S. Senate from Kentucky in the 1800s. J. Wesley Caradine, who was black, was Clay County’s first state representative after it was made in 1871.
Clay County used to be called the West Point Micropolitan Statistical Area by the federal government, but that changed in 2013.
It is in a part of the state called the Golden Triangle.
The county has a total area of 416 square miles (1,080 km2), of which 410 square miles (1,100 km2) are land and 5.9 square miles (15 km2) (1.4%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
