Manchester is the county town.
The county was made in 1807 and named after Green Clay, who lived from 1757 to 1826.Clay was a member of the governments of both Virginia and Kentucky.
He was the first cousin once removed of Henry Clay, who was a U.S. Senator from Kentucky and Secretary of State in the 1800s.
Clay County was made in 1807 when Floyd, Knox, and Madison counties gave it land. In January 1936, the building caught fire.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 471 square miles (1,220 km2), of which 469 square miles (1,210 km2) are land and 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2) (0.4% of the total area) are water.
