Winchester is the county seat.
Named after Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark, the county was formed in 1792 from Bourbon and Fayette counties.
Clark County is included in the Lexington-Fayette, KY Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 255 square miles (660 km2), of which 252 square miles (650 km2) is land and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The county’s terrain is moderately rolling. Tobacco is a prominent farm product, and cattle is raised there as well.
The Kentucky River, Red River, Lulbegrud Creek, and Boone’s Creek are among the water sources. Lulbegrud Creek is called after Lorbrulgrud, the capital city of Brobdingnag in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.
