William Claiborne was the second governor of the Mississippi Territory. The county is named after him.
Claiborne County is part of both the Jackson-Vicksburg-Brookhaven, MS Combined Statistical Area and the Vicksburg, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area.
It is bounded on the west by the Mississippi River and on the north by the Big Black River.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 501 square miles (1,300 km2), of which 487 square miles (1,260 km2) are land and 14 square miles (36 km2) are water, or 2.8%.
