Grants is the county seat.

It was formed on June 19, 1981, from the westernmost four-fifths of the formerly much larger Valencia County, making it New Mexico’s youngest county and the third youngest in the United States.

The Grants, New Mexico Micropolitan Statistical Area includes Cibola County.

The county has a thriving mining industry, with numerous Uranium mines.

The county has a total area of 4,542 square miles (11,760 km2), of which 4,539 square miles (11,760 km2) is land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) (0.05%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
