Taylorville is the county seat.
Sangamon, Montgomery, and Shelby counties merged to become Christian County on February 15, 1839.
It was named after the Kentucky county of Christian. It was initially named Dane County and remained so until 1840.
The county has a total area of 716 square miles (1,850 km2), of which 709 square miles (1,840 km2) is land and 6.3 square miles (16 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
The county is surrounded on the north by the Sangamon River, which is intersected by its south fork.
